Blog 4.11: Napalm in the Morning

Note: You will need headphones for this exercise!

For a 10-15 year period after the Vietnam War, filmmakers could not get enough of the story.  So much happened during that period (war, cultural changes, musical innovation, political crisis) that it captured the hearts and minds of all those involved.  In this opening scene of the standard for Vietnam movies -- Apocalypse Now -- you see an entire generation's soul.

  • What does the director tell you with these images?
  • Trace the sounds throughout the scene.  Try to classify them as diabetic, internal diabetic, and non-diagetic sounds -- explain where and why.  When does their seem to be more than one type of sound?  What is the effect?
  • How did the lighting and framing choices affect the scene?
