Who Are You: What’s Your Story?

We are a composite of the stories we have been told.  Who do you love, who do you hate?  What does evil look like, or how about love?  As citizens of an entertainment culture, you have been bombarded by millions of images all vying for your attention — some you have accepted, some you rejected, some crept in without you knowing.  

By the end of this unit, we will focus on Walt Disney Films and Entertainment, but, in the mean time, we are going to look at the stories that make Walt Disney successful, the cultural pictures we have been taught to love or hate.  We will learn to read both visual and print texts, and we will learn to to evaluate the message they are giving.

In doing so, we hope to develop a clear insight through writing, reading, viewing, and speaking about our culture’s underlying assumptions and the stories we have accepted (probably blindly) as truth. To do this, we will focus on Argumentation — listening to outside voices and responding to them in a reasoned, measured way.

In addition, we will be working on your analytical, reading from the inside-out (learning lessons that the text teaches), and your critical voice, or reading from the outside-in (using academic voices to examine the text from a different perspective than you have before).  Inside or Outside, you will be learning to deeply read texts and think in a sophisticated way about old, familiar stories.
