Mr Thomas — Lynden Christian High School English
To this point, we have discussed heroes, post-modernists, simulacrum, and modern America. This week we will connect the dots and make Martin Dressler come alive through class discussion and group presentations.
Martin Dressler is many things — a story, an ideal, an abstraction; in many ways, he is like the 20th Century (always moving, always changing, not quite sure where it belongs). As we look at the different critical schools of Feminism, Deconstruction, Marxism, Psychoanalysis, and Archetypal Criticism, you will see that he touches on much more than just hotels and women.
He represents the unseen — the ghouls lurking behind the American Story, and his fate, like most of history, really lies in the eyes of the beholder, which is why Tale of an American Dreamer really is a literary masterpiece.
